What is Early Intervention?

Early intervention is a term used to describe interventions and supports for babies and young children with developmental delays and disabilities. Early intervention may have significant impact on young children's social, emotional, and physical development. ​

When to Seek Help

B-12

Birth to 12 Months

Feeding: Request a consultation if your child is tube fed, not consistently growing, is abrasive to feeding, or cough/gags/chokes after swallowing.

Communication: Request a consultation if your child is not consistently responding to sounds, does not respond to his or her name, is not babbling by 9 months, not producing 2 word phrases by 12 months, or if you have concerns regarding his or her language development.

12-24

12-24 Months

Feeding: Request a consultation if your child is not growing adequately, is tube fed, is abrasive to feeding, chokes/coughs/gags while eating or drinking, has not attempted to self-feed, or if you have concerns regarding your child's feeding development.

Communication: Request a consultation if your 24 month year old child is not using at least 50 words consistently, is not following simple 1-step directions, has not combined two words to create a phrase (i.e. go car), if your child appears to not understand what you say, you understand less than 50% of what your child is verbalizing, or if you have concerns regarding your child's speech/language development.

24-36

24-36 Months

Feeding: Request a consultation if your 24 month old drools, has difficulty with chewing, is abrasive to feedings or meal times, is not growing adequately, gags/chokes/coughs during feeding, does not attempt to self-feed, or if you have concerns regarding your child's feeding development

Communication: Request a consultation if your 24 month old is not using 3-5 word phrases, does not ask questions, appears to have difficulty following multistep commands, is difficult to understand, has difficulty answering a variety of questions, or if you have any concerns regarding your child's speech/language development
